Viva la Virgen del Carmen!!!!

This Thursday (16th of July), Estepona will be celebrating  the Virgen del Carmen, the Patron Saint of fishermen and sailors and the main Patron Saint of the city.

The procession is one of the most important traditions in Estepona. Will start at the Church of  "Nuestra Sra. Del Carmen" (1) around 19:30hs and continues along the promenade, where two large groups, one of tourists and devotees of Estepona on the seashore, and the other in boats of all sizes decorated for the occasion, follow it in an atmosphere of joy and festivity.

Once they reach "Correos", the beach near the post office, (2) the Virgin is put into the water (if the weather and sea conditions allow it), while the devote bearers sing "La Salve Marinera". Then, they raise the Virgin and put it on a boat. The Lady of Carmen continues its procession by sea, followed by all the boats crowded with people cheering, using the boat's sirens and  throwing fireworks.

It was once believed, that the Virgin cleared up the waters with her presence and that only after July 16 would the sea be fit for swimming in. We can clearly confirm that it was the Virgin that kicked off the swimsuit season!!.

It is also an evening where all the restaurants in the city centre get packed, so if you are planning to go out to have dinner (on the Spanish dinner time, after 22:00), booking a table is recommendable.

Keep in mind that Thursday is bank holiday in Estepona. Supermarkets, banks and shops are close.

Noche de San Juan - San Juan's Night

San Juan's night is full of bonfires, fireworks, music, dancing, and sardines. It's the welcome to summer, and its celebration takes place during the shortest night of the year.

Many towns, cities or villages celebrate this first Summer Fiesta. All the celebrations share some things in common, yet each also has its peculiarity.

Bonfires, fire and water are the protagonists of the night. Men and women, young people and children, all dedicate their days and afternoons to the preparation of bonfires. According to tradition, if people jump three times over a bonfire on San Juan's night, they will be cleansed and purified, and their problems burned away.

It is the night of San Juan, night of pagan and religious rites, magical night of the summer solstice, where the fire and the water become protagonists, the fire as a purifying element, the water to recover.

Certain festivals seem to summarize life in Spain, with its love of having a good time in the company of friends and loved ones. The Night of San Juan is definitely one of these events. It is a celebration that is usually held on the beach with roaring bonfires, drink, food, and friends. It is a memorable, almost surreal scene and one that needs to be experienced.

I hope you can jump over the fire next year!!!

24 hs Deportivas

In one week Estepona will celebrate the 39th edition of the"24 horas deportivas" An event that unites all its citizens regardless of age, nationality or physical conditions in the practice of different and varied sports disciplines.

But how is that an event of this nature was established?. Here you have the story of how it all began.

It was in April 1977, when a group of  young friends where discussing about the fondness for sports shown by the people of Estepona and regretting about the lack of areas to practice and the little interest shown by public administrations to improve this.

They decided they must do something to show that sport was important for the citizens of Estepona despite the lack of facilities (at that moment they only had a football field without remodelling since it was built in the 50's, and a slab of cement that the local authorities dare to call "multi-sport facility". Therefore, they decided to protest in the most sportsmanlike way possible. They perform jointly all the activities in the "existing facilities" without stop, and they found out that they need an entire day to complete all the activities. That was the beginning of the 24hs of sport in Estepona!

It was amazing to see how the people support the event. Even with sports that took place really late night. Around 1.300 athletes participated on that first edition. Seeing the absolute success of the event, the organizers decided to repeat year after year. Having more support from public administrations, shops in the area and the different sports associations.

Some of the sports you can watch (or participate) during this day are: Football, Basketball, Tennis, Beach Volley, Chess, Golf, Kiteboarding, Martial arts, and a long etc.
